Bird baths are aesthetically pleasing in any space. They bring wildlife and many benefits to your garden! Bird baths tend to crack after going through a freeze-thaw cycle.
The cracks form because concrete is porous, water gets into the pores and pinholes in the concrete. When the water freezes, it expands and wears the concrete. Come springtime, you will notice cracks on the concrete bird bath.
A leaking bird bath is not ideal for the birds, but not to worry there is an easy solution. You can prevent those unsightly cracks and the mold and mildew buildup with DRYLOK® Masonry Waterproofer.
The next time you scrub it clean, let it dry for at least 48 hours. Then, coat the bare concrete surface with DRYLOK® Waterproofer. The DRYLOK® will enter the pores and pinholes in the concrete, and bond to the surface to seal out water. Let it dry for one week, then add fresh water. From here on out, maintenance should be much easier!
Follow these 3 easy steps to achieve the bird bath that will stand the test of time.
1. Prep – Clean the bird bath with warm water and a scrub brush to get rid of unwanted dirt. A scrub brush will aid in removing the pieces of concrete around the cracks.
2. Patch – Patch any cracks in the bird bath using DRYLOK® Fast Plug®
A fast-setting hydraulic cement sets in just 3 – 5 minutes, preventing active or reoccurring water from flowing through cracks and holes in concrete and masonry structures.
3. Paint- Using DRYLOK® Original Concrete & Masonry Waterproofer, paint the inside of the bird bath to seal the concrete for the water to pool inside
